What Is External Warehousing?

External warehousing is an arrangement where an outside provider stores, stages, and delivers a manufacturer’s inventory from a facility outside the plant, and is accountable for accuracy and delivery timing. It differs from ordinary 3PL warehousing, where storage is the whole service and line-timed delivery is not.

Warehousing Capabilities

What External Warehousing Covers

OpTech Automotive runs your off-site inventory the same way we run in-plant labor: as a managed function we’re accountable for, not a storage lease with a forklift attached. The work is scoped around your line rate and delivery windows, not a generic warehousing template.

Where this sits against our other programs: In-House Managed Labor is the same managed model run inside your plant rather than off-site. Just-In-Time Sequencing times what leaves the building to your build order. FTZ / Import Services covers the stretch before imported material is yours to store at all.

Beyond Standard 3PL

External Warehousing vs. Ordinary 3PL

Most plants have already priced ordinary 3PL warehousing. The distinction matters because it determines who’s accountable when a count is wrong or a truck runs late. Ordinary 3PL sells square footage. A managed warehousing partner runs the function.

Accountability

We're Accountable for What's Inside

Ordinary 3PL warehousing leaves liability vague. OpTech Automotive is accountable for your inventory from receipt to delivery, including damage, loss, and miscount while it’s in our care, with terms confirmed in writing before anything moves.

Visibility

You See What We See

Stock levels and staged shipments are visible to your team directly through warehouse management tracking, not relayed through a phone call. You don’t have to ask what’s in stock, you can see it.

Delivery Timing

Delivery Matches Your Line, Not a Truck Schedule

A standard 3PL ships on its own schedule. Delivery from OpTech Automotive is scheduled against your line rate and build sequence, with an established escalation process for an unplanned early pull.

Getting Started

From Capability Assessment to Staged Delivery

Four steps. No lengthy vendor onboarding, and no handoff to a subcontractor you have never met. One coordinator owns the program from scoping through reporting.

01

Capability Assessment

We walk your volume forecast, delivery windows, and current floor-space constraints to scope what off-site storage actually needs to cover.

02

Program Design

Storage layout, staging process, delivery cadence, and inventory tracking are built around your existing production calendar, not a generic warehousing template.

03

Program Launch

Inventory moves off your floor and into a managed, tracked process, with staged delivery active from the first shipment.

04

Ongoing Reporting

Inventory accuracy, delivery timing, and throughput are reported continuously, not at contract renewal.

Straight Answers

External Warehousing FAQs

The questions operations and logistics teams ask before moving inventory into someone else’s building.

External warehousing is an arrangement where an outside provider stores, stages, and delivers a manufacturer's inventory from a facility outside the plant, and is accountable for accuracy and delivery timing rather than just square footage. It's a managed function, not a storage lease.

OpTech Automotive is accountable for inventory from the time it's received until it's delivered to your line, including damage, loss, and miscount while in our care. Specific liability terms and coverage limits are set in the program agreement and confirmed during the capability assessment.

Inventory is tracked through cycle counts and discrepancy reporting built into the storage and staging process, not a year-end audit. Count errors and shrinkage are tracked back to the process step where they occurred, and OpTech Automotive is accountable for resolving them.

Coverage details depend on program size and inventory value, and are confirmed in writing before inventory moves off your floor. This is one of the first things we scope in the capability assessment, not something left to a general policy summary.

Inventory visibility is provided through warehouse management tracking your team can access directly, so you can see stock levels and staged shipments without calling us. Integration scope with your specific ERP or WMS platform is confirmed during program design.

Delivery is scheduled against your line rate and build sequence, not a standing shipment calendar. Staging and delivery windows are built during program design so the warehouse ships to your actual need, not a fixed weekly truck.

Unplanned pulls are handled through an escalation process established during onboarding, with a named coordinator responsible for expediting the shipment. Response time depends on program size and is set during the capability assessment, not improvised after the fact.

Ordinary 3PL warehousing typically sells storage and standard shipping. External warehousing through OpTech Automotive includes managed labor, inventory accountability, and delivery timed to your production line, run to the same standard as our in-plant programs.
